Our trip to Italy this summer was so fantastic! This was the first time that my husband and I got to travel alone with my sister and brother-in-law. We had some great experiences on our vacation, but the best part of the trip was spending time together! We celebrated my sister’s birthday in Athens and my brother-in-laws birthday in Rome. As Neal and I called this our honeymoon, we also celebrated our 22 anniversary…even though we were married in May…LOL! All good things come to those who wait…right?
As you know, I’m doing the LOAD Challenge this month, and today’s prompt took us to this color combination on The Play Date Cafe. I really like that the Studio J Express Kits allow me to substitute color in the paper and other embellishments, because I was able to add a bit of Barn Red to my layout. I think the muted version of these colors really make my photos pop off the page. It makes me so happy!
I can’t wait to get these layouts printed and into my albums. I want to share the excitement with you, too, so watch my blog for more details on how you can win a free Studio J 5-pack (including shipping and page protectors)!
Can’t believe how easy the layout was today! I worked on it while listening to the Project Life Webinar with Jennifer Woodbury and hosted by Lain Ehmann from Layout a Day . You can watch the replay for a week, so be sure to check it out. My friend, Mimi, is doing PL and loving it, so I’ve been wanting to give it a try. I’m really inspired since completing a Smash Book during our trip to Italy this summer! It was such a joy to scrap daily and collect the little bits and pieces of life along the way. It is also making it so easy to create a LOAD about the trip, because my journaling is done. The longest part of my process is finding/editing the photos. Have I mentioned that I love the Express Collections? I seriously L. O. V. E. them!
LOAD #2 is about our long trip starting with standing in security at Sea-Tac to calling mom to thank her for the Euros to meeting our driver in Rome. We decided against getting a car while we were there which was a wise decision…those drivers are crazy! Even so, they clearly know what they are doing, because I don’t think we saw an accident the entire time we were there. Thanks to LOAD and Studio J, I’m going to have this entire vacation scrapbooked by month’s end!

Happy October! Now that I have a month of school under my belt and no travel plans in the near future, I’m ready to get back to my creative endeavors. I’m challenging myself to create a layout a day with the ScrapHappy community. The only time I actually completed the challenge was my first time six years ago, so I’m really determined to make it happen this time. Luckily, it also coincides with CTMH’s Studio J special, so I’m going to create most of my layouts using Studio J to save time and money since it is buy 9, get 1 free this month.
I used layout #8 from the Travels Express Kit. Seriously, the most time consuming part of this layout was narrowing 150 photos from our tour of Crete down to 5! I love that these Express Kits allow me to drop in my photos and journaling without any additional fuss. Honestly, I don’t usually use quick pages because I don’t like the lack of customization. With this page, I was able to customize the title, add a shadow to Crete, and add a cocoa frame around the focal photo. I’ll further bling it out when I get the final print by adding bitty sparkles…they are my not-so-secret addiction!

I am a huge fan of making my own patterned paper using my scrapbooking supplies. The quickest way to create a pattern is using stamps and ink, but I also like to layer strips of paper (either cardstock or patterned) to create a unique and colorful background. To make this striped paper, I…
1) Cut cardstock into 1/4″x12″ strips.
2) Ran an 8.5″x12″ piece of cardstock through the Xyron to create a large sticker.
3) Removed a little bit of the backing at a time to lay down my strips of paper in a random pattern.
4) Cut off the excess cardstock by turning the piece over and cutting along the edge of both sides of the base.
I now have a fun piece of striped paper that will give my next project a pop of color!
Now, I’ve been using this technique for years with my paper supplies, but it’s also a perfect technique for customizing your Studio J layouts! The technique is very similar in Studio J…you simply use text boxes to create your strips and then fill them with a solid color or patterned paper.
When creating small strips using text boxes in Studio J, you may see a warning symbol. A couple ways to minimize the warning symbols is to reduce the font size in the text box and hit the space bar so the text is replaced with a blank space. If you still see the warning symbol, never fear…it won’t print on your final layout.
On this example, I used small strips of blue paper to cover up a color that did not go well with my photos. I love that Studio J allows us to be as flexible with our layouts as our classic supplies do.
Below you will find a video tutorial that shows you how I created this layout in Studio J. It also gives a couple more examples of how I used strips of paper to mask or add colors using my classic supplies.
I finally finished my Studio J layouts for convention yesterday. I love that CTMH provides us with instructions but then encourages us to do our own thing. I definitely did my own thing on this layout. Yet, what I learned from the instructions is fantastic!
Take a look at the pleated ribbon at the top of the page. This is created by overlapping ribbon tabs rotated 90 degrees. Every other tab is brought forward to make it look like pleated ribbon. How cute is that?! I thought it was the perfect anchor for my photo pennants.
I created the photo pennants in Photoshop and will upload them to my freebie page if there is any interest. Leave a comment to let me know.
Seriously, every single new paper kit and lots of the new embellishments are available to play with on Studio J right now! I’ve only ordered 1/6th of what I want from this new Idea Book (I try to pace myself!), but I feel like I have the whole thing as a result of Studio J. Check out this quick tip video and let me know what you think.
If you haven’t checked out my new blog yet, be sure to read my “A Big Thank You & Celebration” post! You’ll also get a look at the new CTMH Art Philosophy Cricut Collection. Mine will be here soon; I can’t wait!
I’m really ready to start scrapbooking my Hawaii photos and to finish some pages I’m donating to a friend who recently started chemo for bone cancer. Her son asked her to create a scrapbook for him, so my goal is to help her make his wish come true. Sharing our stories with the ones we love is so important! I don’t have kids, so I think I lose sight of that sometimes. Yet, I’m the only one who is qualified to tell my story! I’ll share the layouts that I make for her here. I’m working on the Technique Tuesday “Live in the Moment” kit by Ali Edwards right now. The inks that came with the kit are so nice; they are so chalky and smooth and look absolutely beautiful.
I completed a layout while cropping with a friend last night and another one today on Studio J! I love weekends like this. Only 1 1/2 weeks left of school and then I hope to spend my summer in many such creative endeavors. Be sure to check out the video on my new blog, Studio Scrapping! I’ll post my other layout after I talk to my sister and iron out the journalling for it. 🙂
I’m so excited about my new blog, Studio Scrapping, which focuses on all things Studio J! I spent the last month setting up my new blog and coordinating my Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube accounts with it. It is a one-stop-shop for everything you want to know about Studio J. Now that I’m “done” creating the site, I can get back to creating tutorials. I have a ton of ideas that I want to share with you, so I hope you will follow me at my new site!
Close To My Heart is offering an amazing special this month…create a Studio J layout and receive a FREE JPG of it–no purchase required! Seriously, how awesome is that?!
It gets better! Both Close To My Heart and Studio Scrapping are holding contests this month. Upload your free JPG to our Facebook pages, get your friends and family to “Like” your layout, and win big!
